Adolescent Project:
Project Description:
The Adolescent project was a project that included interviewing a peer in adult years to help give us a understanding of what it takes to become an adult. After the interview we write an essay about the interview and advice that we took to become a young adult.
Interview Essay
Brennen Worth
For my interview project, I interviewed my mom named Michelle Worth about her experience as an adolescent. Michelle is a very active, hardworking, and amazing person. First of all, she's my mom but not only that, she’s a single mom that takes care of me and my brother. My mom loves to hike, ski, cut hair, and just be herself which makes her the best mom I can ask for. She works her ass off to support herself, me and my brother which I'm extremely grateful for. I'm also so grateful since she is the one who decided to bring us to Colorado from depressing, flat, Illinois 8 years ago.
My mom as an adolescent had a good relationship with her two sisters and mom but not with her father. The reason she didn't have a good relationship with father was since he was very strict. Having a strict parent is not always bad and not always good. It's not always bad since it can teach us our responsibilities to become an adult. It's also not always good to be strict because being too strict can cause children to eventually not care and want to go do their own thing. This is what basically happened with my mom, where her father was extremely strict and overprotective which caused her to want to be independent and not deal with him. My mom believes he was like that because she was the oldest out of her 2 sisters and he expected the most from her. My mom mentioned, “My father always looked at me as a bad teenager up to no good but in reality, I wasn't bad, and he didn't know how to relate to me” (Worth). Her father couldn't really understand and relate to her since for him he grew up in Ireland which is extremely different from America where my mom grew up. His father was also very strict which affects how he was into adult years. Personally I can connect about the bad relationship with Dads but definitely not about the strictness. Why I relate is because my relationship with my dad is not very good at all because the past 5 years my Dad has moved on to possibly the worst future that I kindly refuse to explain since I take it personally and only let people I trust to know the situation. After seeing what my dad has done that affects me as an adolescent, it really encourages me not to be like him just like how my mom realized how strict her dad was and not be like him as a parent.
Being an adolescent is extremely important because the way we are raised, treated, etc, has a major impact on how we are as adults. My mom mentioned, “At this age, you learn a lot of valuable lessons and you need to realize they are lessons because the consequences are more serious as an adult than the consequences as an adolescent” (Worth). As a teen, at times it is very hard because we learn to manage our emotions and relationships. At this age it is very stressful for most teens because “You're trying to figure out who you are, what your place is in life and sometimes that doesn't work out the way you want which causes lots of stress and negative emotions” as my mom said during the interview and I can relate because before I came to Durango I didn't have many of the right friends that fit my personality but ever since I started at Animas I think I have found myself and my place in life but there definitely is some stress included with the moving and a completely new town which my mom experienced often as an adolescence.
As an adolescent, It is very important to do good in school so I can go to college and have a good future. Interviewing my mom about his topic made me want to try to my highest extent because she said, “As an adolescent, I wanted to be independent and not care much about school which affects me now and I regret it because I missed the opportunity to go to college” (Worth). Which made me think of how good I have to do in school because not getting into college in the future will be very hard for the rest of my life. Since I started at animas I am more determined to get where I have to be since this school and teachers are very supportive of giving their students a good education and 100% college acceptance, unlike my last high school where it was very hard to learn I basically gave up and let my education fall.
Therefore, after interviewing my mom it really made me realize the bad stuff I'm doing in my life and the ways I can change them so I don't end up like my Dad. Doing this will affect my mom so much because all my mom wants to see from me is to be successful which will make her really feel like the best Mom ever, which she already is but she just doesn't realize it yet until it happens.

Project Reflection:

After finishing my project I am very proud of myself and what my outcome was. I'm most proud of my Interview essay, which is the main part of this project. Why I'm so proud of this is because personally I'm not good at writing and somehow I completed a two-page essay, which doesn't seem like much but for me that's a lot. What really helped me to write my essay was my first draft. My rough draft helped me write my final draft an exceedingly amount because after my rough draft I was able to review and critique in all ways possible to make my final draft the best essay I've written to date. Another reason my essay turned out the way it did, was when finishing my rough draft I was able to talk to Lori and revise my essay so I can critique it from her reflection and advice.
Overall this project wasn't as hard as I expected it to be, surprisingly. Why I say surprisingly is because usually when I do projects I always get side tracked or just give honestly but after doing this I feel more determined to do more of what has to come. Personally I recently have been getting interested in my work especially at Animas which is project based learning and that I feel really helps me actually get more interested and want to complete everything. Also the fact that I am now a Sophomore and If I don't do good in school now I will have consequences now and big time in the future.
This project taught me a lot about being an adolescent and becoming an adult. The interview with my mom taught me that being an adolescent is a very stressful time in life since we are just trying to find our place in life which can cause stress and negative emotions. So far in my adolescent age my experience can be very tough at times and very positive because family, friends play a big role and also it really just depends what environment you are in to make us the people we are in the future. This interview also gave me very important advice and im very glad this was my project because If it wasn't I don't think I would have ever talked to my mom about her experience as an adolescent. If I wouldn't have talked to my mom about her experience I don't think I would be the person I am now cause ever since the interview I feel like a different person and ready to become an adult. Her advice has made me determined to not make some of the mistakes she did and i'm not saying shes a bad person, it's just that some of her mistakes in the past affects her in some ways now as a mom.
In conclusion of this whole project I believe that I deserve a solid nine for my score. According to the rubric score nine is usually coming to class prepared and every now & then forget an assignment which I recently did with my portrait. In class I always try to listen when I have too and use my class time efficiently so I don't have homework unless its assigned as homework. This project taught me so much facts and advice to give me a heads up to what comes later in life. Overall I think this is what I deserve for my grade and I hope to do another educational project.
